Máximo Antonio del Rosario (born November 3, 1955), commonly known as Toño Rosario, is a Merengue musician born in the Dominican Republic. Toño is well-known throughout Latin American, the US, and Europe. When Toño was a child, others would tease him by calling him "El Cuco" (the "Boogeyman"). Instead of being ashamed of this nickname, Toño embraced it and has referred to himself as "El Cuco" in many songs and interviews.
Biography
Rosario was born in Higüey, a province located in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic. Since childhood, he and his brothers showed a great interest in music. They would play self-made instruments made out of bottle caps, plastic containers, and other items. Soon, they started singing and playing in the neighborhood and started what would become Los Hermanos Rosario, a music band with whom Rosario enjoyed great success.
In the late 1980s, after 12 years of being with his brothers, Toño decided to leave the group and began his own solo career. He debuted on April 14, 1990 in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum of Puerto Rico. He went on to become the most popular merengue singer with most of his albums selling millions of copies through out the world.
Toño's song "Alegria" was played at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan whenever former Detroit Tigers utility infielder Omar Infante came to bat.
